Bicultural T-shirt

Biculturalism – today’s world, creatively expressed.

Biculturalism is a body of work Hamazaki Wong has promulgated over the past couple of years. For us, it describes the melding of two cultures that together, becomes a third strain of its own, something that’s emblematic of many markets. Take the Vancouver marketplace (and other high-immigrant locations too) where English-speaking Vancouverites become exposed to the Chinese language, hearing and adopting utterances that express emotion, emphasis, or, comedy. Many of these expressions have found their way into common usage (such as the ubiquitous ‘ai-ya’) but what exactly do they mean and how are they used? At Hamazaki Wong, we set out to bridge that gap by producing a series of t-shirts that address this language issue in an approachable and delightful way while providing some education, modest as it may be. Most importantly, these t-shirts are a creative manifestation of Hamazaki Wong’s thinking on biculturalism and help to explain this concept in a way that’s simple, tangible, and compelling. We wanted to elicit ‘aha’ moments with a tone and voice that forces a smile and some deeper insight. Finally, we recognized that we were doing something that’s not been done before, and this obligated the creative to be simple and effective in a way that truly communicated.

Emotive Series – Expressions, Emotions,  Utterances, Energy.

This Series features Cantonese and Mandarin expressions that have emotional resonance. Whether frustration, annoyance, energizing, or just everyday utterances, this Series captures often-heard phrases that are part of the cultural vernacular. Designed with Chinese and English in the tradition of dictionary definitions, Emotive teaches while it delights.

Visual Series – When Every Character Tells a Story.

This exciting design Series features Chinese hanzi characters and how they evolved from pictographic symbols on oracle bones to the diverse scripts and styles used today. Here, we animate them to bring visual context and combine them with an English-language statement to bring the characters to life, adding another dimension. How divergent is that?

We’d love to hear your thoughts and idea on our Bicultural Collection. Or if you have any requests, we’d love to hear those too!
